Philippe Zysset was born in Geneva and studied engineering physics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). He started his professional career as a research engineer in a medical implant company and continued as a research fellow in an orthopaedic biomechanics laboratory of the Harvard Medical School. Then, he worked as a research assistant at the Laboratory of Applied Mechanics of EPFL, where he obtained his PhD in biomechanics under the supervision of Prof. Alain Curnier. In the next step, he became a postdoctoral fellow at the orthopaedic research laboratories of the University of Michigan and was appointed in 1997 as an assistant professor in solid biomechanics at EPFL. In 2003, Philippe Zysset was nominated as a professor of biomechanics at the Vienna University of Technology, where he founded a laboratory for micromechanics of biological tissues and initiated a novel master program in biomedical engineering. In 2011, he became professor of biomechanics at the Institute for Surgical Technology and Biomechanics of the University of Bern. His research concentrates on the theoretical and experimental characterization of the hierarchical mechanical properties of biological tissues and the development of patient-specific simulation models of the musculoskeletal system.
