Waldo Valenzuela is the head of the NeuroCenter’s Informatics Group (NCIG) at the University Hospital of Bern (Inselspital), Switzerland. He holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Bern, where he focused on developing effective human-machine interfaces for medical image analysis. His academic foundation includes a degree in Electronic Engineering and a Master of Science with specialization in mixed-signal VLSI circuit design and neural networks from the University of Concepción, Chile. Between 2007 and 2012, he worked as a part-time professor and led biomedical engineering research projects at the University of Concepción.

Dr. Valenzuela joined the University of Bern in 2012 as a researcher and IT systems administrator, contributing to interdisciplinary research on aging, spinal biomechanics, and biomedical computing infrastructure. From 2016 to 2018, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher in medical image processing and user-guided segmentation tools. He then served as a Senior Data Scientist at the Insel Data Science Center (2018–2020), where he contributed to the development and implementation of clinical data solutions.

Since 2018, he has also been a lecturer in the Master’s Program in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Bern. His current research focuses on medical software systems, clinical AI integration, and secure data-sharing platforms. He is the creator of Medical-Blocks, a cloud-oriented system designed to manage, share, and analyze anonymized biomedical data across hospitals and research institutions, enabling secure collaboration, reproducible research, and real-world AI deployment in clinical settings.
