Jens H. Kowal is an assistant professor for Ophthalmic Technologies at the University of Bern, Switzerland. He received the M.Sc. degree in Technical Computer Science from the Technical University Berlin, Germany in 1997. In 2002 he received his Ph.D. for Biomedical Engineering from the University of Bern, Switzerland. He worked as a postdoctoral research fellow for the M.E. Müller Institute in Bern Switzerland and the University of Western Australia in Perth Australia. In 2004 he started as a senior research assistant heading the group for “Smart Surgical Instrumentation” at the MEM Research Center for Orthopedic Surgery, Institute for Surgical Technology and Biomechanics at the University of Bern, Switzerland. In 2007 he joined the Center for Computer Assisted and Reconstructive Surgery, at the New England Baptist Hospital, Boston MA, USA. In 2008 he worked as a visiting researcher at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Boston MA, USA. Since 2008 he has been heading a group for Ophthalmic Technology Research within the ARTORG Center of the University of Bern Switzerland.
